Purpose of Alpha Releases
The primary objectives of Alpha releases are twofold:
- Provide developers with a foundation to test their extensions and report any issues well in advance of the final release.
- Allow users to explore the new features introduced in Joomla 5.0.
However, please note that this alpha version of Joomla 5.0 is not suitable for production sites and is intended for testing purposes only.
What’s New in Joomla 5.0 Alpha1?
Joomla 5.0 Alpha1 brings with it a host of changes from Joomla 4.4, including updates to Tinymce 6.1, Fontawesome 6.4, and the Webauthn Library. It also introduces many Smart Search improvements and a significant internal code restructure to utilise more modern APIs.
Release Schedule
The final release of Joomla 5.0 is scheduled for 17th October 2023, following a series of alpha, beta, and release candidate phases. These stages are crucial in refining the platform, adding new features, making minor changes, and ensuring stability for the launch day.
Future Plans for Joomla 5.0
As we embark on the journey of Joomla 5.0, we’re planning to create a streamlined foundation for Joomla’s future. Several projects could become part of Joomla 5.0, provided they are release-ready by Joomla 5.0 Beta. These include updating the system requirements to PHP 8.1 & MySQL 8.0.11+, MariaDB 10.4+ and PostgreSQL 12+, Bootstrap 5.3, Codemirror 6, and more.
