Joomla 3 reached end-of-life in August 2023. That means no security patches, no bug fixes, and no official support. Sites still running Joomla 3 are at increasing risk as known vulnerabilities go unpatched and hosting environments move to newer PHP versions that introduce compatibility problems.

The upgrade path from Joomla 3 through to Joomla 4, 5 or 6 is a major migration — not a simple one-click update. Extensions need compatibility checking, templates often need rebuilding, and the database schema changes significantly. Done right, it's seamless. Done wrong, it can break your site entirely. The Three Joomla Upgrade Paths We Handle

Each transition has different complexity and risk levels. Here's what to expect from each.

Joomla 3 → Joomla 4

This is a major breaking upgrade. Joomla 4 introduced a completely rewritten framework, new admin interface, and Bootstrap 5. Many Joomla 3 extensions are not compatible and require replacement. Templates built for Joomla 3 do not work on Joomla 4.

What this means: We audit every installed extension before starting, identify what needs replacing, rebuild or update your template, migrate the database, and test extensively on staging before cutover.

Complexity: High. Timeline: 1–4 weeks depending on site complexity.

Joomla 4 → Joomla 5

A significantly smoother transition than the 3→4 jump. Joomla 5 builds on the same framework as Joomla 4, so most extensions and templates compatible with Joomla 4 will work — though not all.

What this means: We run the compatibility checker, update extensions that have Joomla 5 releases, test on staging, and apply the upgrade during a low-traffic period with a backup taken immediately prior.

Complexity: Low–Medium. Timeline: A few hours to a day.

Joomla 5 → 6 (and Beyond)

Joomla 6 is in active development and is expected to continue Joomla 5's framework. The Joomla project has committed to a predictable release cycle, with long-term support (LTS) versions providing stability between major versions.

What this means: Sites we manage on our OMSP plan will be kept current as major versions release. We plan these migrations proactively — you won't be stuck on an EOL version on our watch.

Future versions (7, 8, 9) will follow the same managed approach.

Automatic Joomla Updates – What Gets Updated Automatically and What Doesn't

Joomla 4, 5 and 6 can apply minor patch releases automatically — for example, updating from 5.1.2 to 5.1.3 or 6.x.x in the background. This is useful for security patches that don't involve breaking changes.

However, automatic updates carry risk if you have custom code, heavily modified templates, or extensions that haven't been tested against the new release. We configure automatic updates conservatively for sites we manage — applying security patches promptly but holding major point releases for testing first.

For sites on our Ongoing Maintenance & Support Plan, we manage the full update cycle — you never need to think about it.
